If your RCD keeps tripping randomly and you cannot link it to a specific appliance, the neutral wiring in your circuit could be to blame. Here is what is happening and what you can safely do about it.
What the neutral wire does
Every circuit in your home has a live wire that carries current to your appliances and a neutral wire that returns that current back to the consumer unit. Under normal conditions these two currents are equal and balanced. The RCD constantly monitors this balance. If it detects even a tiny difference, around 30 milliamps or less in a standard domestic installation, it trips to protect you.
How a faulty neutral causes tripping
If the neutral wire is loose, damaged, corroded, or incorrectly connected, current can find alternative return paths. Sometimes that alternative path runs through the earth conductor or through a person. The RCD sees this imbalance and trips. The problem often comes and goes because a loose connection can make and break contact depending on temperature changes, vibration, or how much load is on the circuit.
Common signs pointing to a neutral fault
The RCD trips with no obvious faulty appliance plugged in.
Tripping happens at random times rather than when a specific device is switched on.
Lights flicker or sockets work intermittently on the same circuit.
The problem gets worse in cold or damp weather.
