Can I Replace a Halogen Bulb with an LED?

The short answer is yes — and it's one of the easiest energy-saving upgrades you can make at home. Most LED bulbs are designed as direct replacements for halogens, using the same fitting types. Here's what you need to know before you start.

Common Halogen Fitting Types and Their LED Equivalents

GU10 (mains voltage, 240V twist-and-lock): Straightforward swap. Just buy a GU10 LED.

B22 (Bayonet cap) or E27 (Edison screw): Standard LED bulbs are widely available in both.

MR16 (12V, two-pin): These run on a transformer. This is where it gets slightly more complicated (see below).

What to Check Before Buying

Wattage: You don't need to match wattage — you match lumens (brightness). A 50W halogen is typically replaced by a 5–7W LED.

Colour temperature: Halogens are warm white (~2700K). Choose an LED with a similar Kelvin rating to avoid a harsh, cool look.

Dimmable?: If your lights are on a dimmer switch, buy dimmable LEDs and check your dimmer is LED-compatible. Many older dimmers won't work correctly with LEDs.

The MR16 (12V) Warning

If you have recessed downlights with small two-pin MR16 bulbs, they run at 12V via a transformer. There are two transformer types:

Electronic (high-frequency) transformers: Usually compatible with LED MR16s, but check the minimum load rating.

Magnetic (wire-wound) transformers
