Can I run a 32-amp cooker circuit in a 2.5mm cable – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

Published 19 July 2026

## Can I Run a 32A Cooker Circuit in 2.5mm Cable?

**The short answer is no — and it is genuinely dangerous to try.**

Every cable has a maximum current it can safely carry before it begins to overheat. If you push more current through a cable than it is rated for, the insulation can melt, cause a fire inside your walls, or create a risk of electric shock. This is not a minor technicality — it is one of the most common causes of house fires related to electrical installations.

**What the numbers mean for you:**

- **2.5mm² cable** can carry roughly **18–27 amps** depending on how it is installed (buried in a wall, clipped to a surface, or run through insulation).

- A **32A cooker circuit** needs cable rated to handle at least 32 amps continuously — this means **6mm² cable** as a minimum in most homes.

- If your cable is run through or touching loft insulation, the rating drops even further, making 2.5mm² completely inadequate.

**What you should check (safely, without touching wiring):**

- Look at your consumer unit (fusebox). Does the cooker breaker say **32A**?

- Can you see where the cable runs from the consumer unit to the cooker outlet? Does it look like a thin cable (similar to a socket cable)?

- Is your cooker occasionally tripping the breaker, running slowly, or showing error codes? This can be a sign of an undersized circuit.

**Do not attempt to inspect, replace, or extend the cable yourself.** Cooker circuits are fi
