Using a 13-Amp Socket to Charge Your EV — What Every Homeowner Should Know
A standard three-pin 13-amp socket — the type found in every UK home — can be used to charge an electric vehicle using the Mode 2 'granny cable' that comes supplied with most new EVs. However, just because it works does not mean it is safe for long-term regular use.
What Actually Happens
Your EV draws close to the full 13-amp rated current for many hours at a time (typically 8–12 hours overnight).
A ring-main socket is designed for intermittent loads, not sustained overnight draws.
This prolonged current causes heat build-up in the socket contacts, plug pins, and the wiring behind the socket.
Over time this leads to arcing, discolouration, and in worst cases — fire.
When a 13-Amp Socket Is Acceptable
Occasional or emergency use only — topping up on a rare night away from home.
The socket is modern, undamaged, and correctly rated.
You are never using an extension lead or multi-socket adaptor (this is dangerous and must be avoided).
The socket is on a ring final circuit protected by a 32-amp breaker with a working RCD.
What to Check Before You Plug In
Inspect the socket faceplate — no scorch marks, cracks, or loose fit.
