Is it safe to bypass my RCD protection to stop nuisance tripping – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

It is completely understandable to feel frustrated when your RCD keeps tripping and cutting power to part of your home, especially if it happens regularly or at inconvenient times. However, bypassing or disabling your RCD is one of the most dangerous things you could do in your home, and it is also a criminal offence under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

What the RCD actually does is monitor the flow of electricity in and out of a circuit. If it detects even a tiny imbalance, as small as 30 milliamps, it cuts the power in about 30 milliseconds. That speed and sensitivity is what prevents electrocution. Without it, a fault that sends current through a person's body could be fatal before a standard fuse or breaker even reacts.

Nuisance tripping means the RCD is detecting a real problem. It might not look like a problem to you, but the RCD is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Common causes include the following.

A faulty or ageing appliance that is leaking a small amount of current to earth. Try unplugging appliances one at a time to identify the culprit.

Damp getting into an outdoor socket, garden light, or garage circuit, especially after rain.

A damaged cable, perhaps from DIY drilling or a staple driven through insulation.

Multiple appliances each leaking a tiny amount of current that adds up above the RCD threshold. This is called cumulative leakage.

An old or worn-out RCD that is becoming oversensit
