What does it mean if my consumer unit main earth terminal is loose – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

Published 1 October 2026

The main earth terminal in your consumer unit is one of the most important safety connections in your home. It links your entire electrical installation to earth, which is what allows fuses, RCDs, and circuit breakers to trip and disconnect power safely when something goes wrong. If this connection is loose, that protection can be seriously reduced or lost entirely.

What a loose main earth terminal means in plain terms is that the thick green and yellow cable connecting your consumer unit to the earth electrode, main bonding conductors, or the electricity supplier's earth point is not making a solid, reliable electrical connection. Even if the cable is still physically present, a loose screw terminal can introduce resistance into the earthing path, which can prevent protective devices from operating quickly enough in a fault.

You might notice the issue if you see the green and yellow cable moving easily when gently touched, if you spot burn marks or discolouration around the terminal block, or if an electrician has flagged it during an inspection. You should not attempt to investigate this closely yourself or attempt to tighten the screw, because the main earth bar carries voltages during fault conditions and working near live components in a consumer unit is dangerous.

Signs that this might be causing wider problems include:

RCDs tripping without an obvious reason

Appliances giving small tingling sensations when touched
