## Neutral vs Earth — What Every Homeowner Should Know
If you've ever looked inside a plug or a consumer unit, you'll have seen three wires: **live (brown), neutral (blue), and earth (green/yellow)**. The neutral and earth can look similar in purpose, but they do very different jobs.
### What Does the Neutral Do?
The **neutral wire completes the electrical circuit**. When you switch on a lamp, electricity flows from the supply through the live wire, through your lamp, and returns to the transformer via the neutral. Current flows through it continuously whenever a circuit is in use.
### What Does the Earth Do?
The **earth wire is a safety conductor**. Under normal conditions, **no current flows through it at all**. It only carries current if something goes wrong — for example, if the live wire touches the metal casing of an appliance. In that case, the fault current travels down the earth wire, trips the fuse or circuit breaker, and protects you from electric shock.

- **Neutral:** Blue insulation, carries return current during normal use, connected to the neutral bar in your consumer unit
- **Earth:** Green and yellow insulation, carries fault current only, connected to the earth bar and ultimately to the ground via an earth electrode or the supply cable
