Thermal runaway sounds alarming, and it can be serious, but understanding what it means helps you know what to watch for and when to act.
What it actually is
Every home battery, whether it is a lithium-ion unit like a Tesla Powerwall or a lithium iron phosphate system like a GivEnergy, stores energy in individual cells. If one of those cells gets too hot, it starts a chain reaction. Heat causes a chemical breakdown inside the cell, that breakdown releases more heat, and the extra heat causes more breakdown. Left unchecked, this can lead to fire, toxic gas release, or in extreme cases an explosion. The process can happen very quickly once it starts.
How likely is it in your home?
Modern home batteries sold in the UK are required to meet strict safety standards, and reputable systems include a battery management system, or BMS, which constantly monitors temperature, voltage, and charge levels to prevent exactly this situation. Thermal runaway is genuinely rare in properly installed, well-maintained home batteries. The risk is higher when a system has been damaged, poorly installed, incorrectly sized, or is approaching the end of its service life.
