What is thermal runaway in a lithium home battery and can it happen to my system – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians
Published 15 October 2026
Thermal runaway sounds alarming, and it should be taken seriously, but understanding what it is and what protects you from it will help you make sense of your home battery system.
What is thermal runaway in plain terms?
Inside every lithium battery are chemical cells that store energy. If one of those cells gets too hot, it can start a reaction that makes it hotter still. That extra heat affects the cells around it, which then heat up too. The process feeds itself, getting faster and more intense, and in serious cases it can result in fire, toxic smoke, or even an explosion. This is what engineers mean by thermal runaway.
What causes it?
The most common causes are overcharging the battery beyond its safe voltage limit, physical damage such as a puncture or crush, a fault in the battery management system that fails to stop the charge at the right time, manufacturing defects inside the cells themselves, and extreme external heat such as direct sunlight on the battery casing for prolonged periods.
Does this mean my home battery is dangerous?
Not necessarily. Modern home battery systems such as the Tesla Powerwall, Givenergy, SolarEdge, and similar products include a battery management system, often called a BMS. This is an electronic brain that constantly monitors cell temperature, voltage, and current. If anything goes outside safe limits, it shuts the system down automatically. When a system is correctly installed by a qu
