## Why Is My Socket Hot? What Every Homeowner Should Know

A socket that feels warm or hot is not normal and should never be ignored. In most UK homes, a standard 13A socket outlet should be no more than a few degrees above room temperature during normal use. If yours is noticeably warm — and especially if it is hot — something is wrong.

### The Most Common Causes

- **Loose wiring connections** — the most frequent cause. A loose live, neutral, or earth terminal inside the socket creates electrical resistance, which generates heat. This can eventually lead to arcing and fire.

- **Overloading** — plugging too many high-demand appliances into one socket or extension lead draws more current than the socket is rated for.

- **Faulty or worn socket** — older or damaged sockets can develop internal faults, particularly in the contacts behind the shutters.

- **Damaged wiring** — degraded insulation or a partial break in the cable feeding the socket.

- **Poor quality extension leads** — cheap multi-way adaptors can overheat long before the circuit breaker trips.

### What You Can Safely Check

- **Switch off and unplug** everything from the socket before touching it.

- Check whether the socket **looks discoloured** (brown or black marks around the faceplate or plug pins).

- Smell for **burning or a plasticky odour** near the socket.

- Check whether you are **overloading** the socket with multiple high-wattage appliances such as kettle
