Why does my appliance socket keep sparking at night – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

Published 6 July 2026

## Why Is My Socket Sparking at Night?

The good news is that a brief, tiny blue flash when you plug or unplug something is often normal (a small arc as the circuit connects). However, **persistent, repeated, or large sparks are a serious warning sign**.

### Most Common Causes

- **Loose terminal connections** inside the socket — wires that aren't firmly clamped can arc (spark) especially when an appliance draws current at startup

- **Worn or damaged socket contacts** — older sockets can lose their grip on plug pins, creating a poor connection that arcs

- **Overloaded circuit** — too many appliances drawing current can cause heat and arcing at the weakest point

- **Faulty appliance** — the appliance itself may have a damaged plug or internal fault causing a surge

- **Moisture ingress** — condensation in kitchens or utility rooms can track across internal components and create arcing

### What You Can Safely Do

- **Switch the socket off** at the wall switch (if double-pole switched) and **unplug all appliances**

- Check the plug on the appliance for **brown scorch marks, melted plastic, or bent pins**

- Look at the socket faceplate for **discolouration, burn marks, or a burning smell**

- Check your **consumer unit (fuse box)** — has an RCD or breaker tripped?

- **Do not attempt to open the socket yourself** — live parts are d
