## Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping — Plain English Explanation

Your consumer unit (fuse box) contains circuit breakers — small switches that automatically cut the power when something goes wrong. When one keeps tripping, it's doing exactly what it's designed to do: protecting your wiring and your home from damage or fire.

### The Three Main Reasons a Breaker Trips

- **Overload** — Too many appliances drawing power at once on the same circuit. This is the most common cause. A typical ring main is designed for a limited load, and plugging in too many high-wattage devices (heaters, kettles, tumble dryers) can exceed it.

- **Short circuit** — A live wire touches a neutral wire somewhere in your wiring or an appliance. This causes a sudden surge of current. The breaker trips almost instantly.

- **Earth fault** — A live wire touches an earthed surface. This can be inside a faulty appliance or damaged wiring in the wall.

### What You Can Safely Check Yourself

1. **Identify which breaker is tripping** — note the label (e.g. 'Ring Main Upstairs' or 'Kitchen Sockets').

2. **Unplug all appliances** on that circuit.

3. **Reset the breaker** — push it firmly to the OFF position first, then back to ON.

4. **If it stays on**, plug appliances back in one at a time to find the faulty one.

5. **If it trips immediately** with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring — stop and call an electrician.
