When your main breaker or main switch trips the moment you try to switch it on, even with every circuit breaker turned off and nothing plugged into any socket, it tells you the problem is not coming from your appliances or any individual circuit. The fault is sitting somewhere between the incoming supply and the consumer unit itself, or inside the unit.

Here is what is likely happening in plain terms. The main switch or RCD in your consumer unit is detecting either a short circuit, a ground fault, or an internal wiring problem the moment power is applied. Because it trips so quickly and with nothing connected, the issue is almost certainly within the consumer unit wiring, the incoming tails, or the device itself.

What you can safely check yourself before calling an electrician:

1. Make sure every individual circuit breaker inside the unit is in the OFF position before attempting to reset the main switch.

2. Check whether the consumer unit or surrounding area smells of burning, feels warm, or shows any visible scorch marks. If yes, do not touch anything and call an electrician straight away.
