Why does my electrical panel smell like burning plastic when switched on – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

A burning plastic smell coming from your consumer unit or fuse board is one of the most serious warning signs your home can give you. It means something inside that panel is getting hot enough to melt or char the plastic insulation on cables or components. Left alone, this can cause an electrical fire inside the wall cavity or the panel itself, often with very little visible warning.

The most common causes are:

1. A loose connection on a circuit breaker or neutral bar, which creates resistance and generates heat.

2. An overloaded circuit where too much current is being drawn through a cable not rated to handle it.

3. A failing or damaged MCB (miniature circuit breaker) that is running hot even under normal load.

4. A deteriorated busbar or corroded terminal that is arcing internally.

5. In older properties, an ageing fuse board with rewirable fuses that have been incorrectly repaired.

What you should do right now:

First, do not open the consumer unit cover. There are live components inside that can cause a fatal electric shock even when individual breakers are switched off, because the main incoming supply terminals remain live.

Second, switch off the main isolator switch on the consumer unit if you can do so safely without touching anything else. This is usually a large double-pole switch at the top or left of the board.
