Why Your RCD Keeps Tripping With Nothing Plugged In

If your RCD (Residual Current Device — the switch in your consumer unit labelled 'RCD' or 'Test') trips even when you've unplugged everything, the fault is almost certainly in your fixed wiring or a hardwired fitting, not in any appliance.

What an RCD Actually Does

An RCD monitors the balance of electricity flowing out and returning through a circuit. If even a tiny amount — as little as 30 milliamps — leaks to earth (for example, through damaged insulation or through a person), it trips within milliseconds to protect you.

Common Causes When Nothing Is Plugged In

Moisture or water ingress — a light fitting in a bathroom, loft, or kitchen where condensation or a leak has allowed dampness into the wiring

Damaged cable insulation — a nail or screw driven through a cable behind a wall, or a cable that has been pinched, crushed, or aged

Faulty hardwired fitting — an extractor fan, cooker hood, boiler, or shower unit that is permanently wired (not plugged in) and developing a fault

Deteriorated wiring — older rubber or lead-sheathed cables that have become brittle and cracked over time

A faulty RCD itself — RCDs can develop internal faults and trip spuriously, especially if they are more than 10–15 years old

What You Can Safely Do

1. Reset the RCD — if it holds, monitor it over the next few days

2. Check for obvious water — look for damp patches near light fittings, around the shower, or in the loft

3. Note which circuit is affected — your consumer unit will show which MCB or RCBO sits under the tripping RCD

4. Isolate one circuit at a time — turn off individual MCBs, then try resetting the RCD to identify which circuit is faulty

When to Call an Electrician

The RCD trips immediately on reset

You cannot isolate which circuit is causing it

There are signs of burning, scorching, or a burning smell

The problem follows rain or a plumbing leak

Your wiring is old (pre-1970s especially)

Do not attempt to open accessories, inspect cables inside walls, or carry out insulation resistance tests yourself. These tasks require proper training, calibrated test equipment, and knowledge of BS 7671. Call a Part P registered electrician.
