Why does my socket outlet feel loose – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians

A loose socket is one of those things that is easy to ignore but should not be left alone. There are a few different reasons it might be happening, and most of them are straightforward to understand even if the fix needs a professional.

The most common reason is that the fixing screws holding the faceplate to the mounting box have worked loose over time. Every time a plug is pushed in or pulled out, small forces are applied to the socket, and over months and years those screws can back off slightly. This leaves the faceplate able to move or rock when you use it.

A second cause is a loose or damaged back box. Plastic dry-lining boxes can crack or pull away from the wall, especially in plasterboard. Metal flush boxes in solid walls can also work loose if the fixings corrode or were not set firmly in the first place. If the whole socket seems to move when you touch it, including the box behind it, this is likely the cause.

Another possibility is that the socket itself is old and the internal contacts have worn. Plug pins should grip firmly inside the socket. If there is no resistance when you insert a plug, the contacts have spread and the socket needs replacing.

What you can safely check yourself:

1. Look at the faceplate without touching any screws or wiring. Can you see a gap between the faceplate and the wall, or is it visibly crooked?

2. Check whether the socket feels warm to the touch. Warmth is a warning sign of a loo
