Why Does My Socket Smell Burnt?

A burning smell from an electrical socket is always a warning sign that something is wrong and potentially dangerous. It should never be dismissed as normal or left unchecked.

What Is Most Likely Causing It?

Loose wiring connections — the most common cause. A terminal that isn't fully tightened causes arcing (small electrical sparks), which generates intense localised heat and scorches the plastic housing.

Failed socket internals — the contacts inside the socket can wear out or corrode over time, causing resistance and heat.

Wiring insulation burning — in more serious cases, the heat has already started to damage the cable insulation behind the socket.
