Why Is My Wall Light Sparking When I Switch It On?

Seeing a spark from a wall light switch is understandably alarming, and you are right to take it seriously. In most cases, the cause is a loose, corroded, or failing electrical connection, but there are several possibilities worth understanding before you call an electrician.

What Could Be Causing It?

Loose terminal connections – Over time, screws in switch terminals or light fittings can vibrate loose, causing arcing when current tries to jump across a small gap

Worn or faulty switch mechanism – The contacts inside a switch degrade with age and can arc as they open or close

Deteriorating wiring insulation – Old rubber or fabric-covered wiring (common in pre-1970s homes) can crack and allow conductors to contact each other or the fitting

Incorrect lamp type – Some LED drivers or certain bulb types can cause brief arcing if incompatible with the switch type (especially dimmer switches)

Overloaded circuit – If too many lights are on a single circuit, excessive current can cause arcing at connection points

Water or damp ingress – Moisture tracking into a fitting or back box can cause flashover or sparking

What Should You Do Right Now?

1. Turn off the circuit at your consumer unit (fuse box) – do not simply switch the wall switch off

2. Do not use the light until it has been inspected

3. Check for any smell of burni
