Why Is My Bathroom Socket Sparking Inside the Wall?

If you can see or hear sparking coming from behind a bathroom socket — or from within the tiled wall itself — this is a serious electrical emergency. Bathrooms are classified as a Special Location under UK wiring regulations, meaning extra strict rules apply to any electrical installation there. Sparking inside the wall is not a normal or minor fault.

What is most likely causing it?

Loose or corroded terminal connections — the most common cause. Vibration, age, or poor original installation can cause wires to work loose inside the back box, creating arcing.

Moisture ingress — steam and condensation in bathrooms gradually corrode connections and can cause tracking or short circuits between conductors.

Damaged cable behind the tiles — if tiles were drilled or fixed after the cable was installed, a cable may have been nicked or crushed, causing an intermittent fault or arc.

Wrong socket type installed — standard 13A sockets are not permitted in most bathroom zones. Only shaver sockets to BS EN 61558-2-5 are allowed in Zone 2. An incorrect socket may be failing under load.

Overloaded or aged wiring — older PVC insulation can degrade, particularly in warm, damp environments.
