Why is my earth conductor at the consumer unit showing 50°C when outside is 15°C – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians
Published 31 October 2026
Finding your earth conductor warm or hot at the consumer unit is not normal and should be taken seriously. In a properly working electrical installation, the main earth conductor should carry little to no current under normal conditions. When it runs warm — especially at 50°C with a cool 15°C outside — something is forcing current to flow where it should not be.
What the earth conductor is supposed to do
The earth wire is a safety conductor. It sits dormant unless there is a fault, at which point it carries fault current only long enough to trip a protective device. It is not designed to carry sustained current, so heat means current, and current where it should not be means a fault.
Common reasons this happens
A neutral-to-earth fault somewhere in the installation is one of the most frequent causes. This might be inside a socket, light fitting, appliance, or within the consumer unit itself. Another possibility is a borrowed neutral — older properties sometimes have wiring where neutral and earth have been incorrectly shared or swapped, either by mistake or by a previous unqualified person.
A fault inside a connected appliance can also drive current through the earth. If a piece of equipment has an internal fault, fault current can flow continuously through the earth path before it builds up enough to trip a breaker.
What you can safely check yourself
Switch off and unplug all appliances.
