Why is my earth conductor at the consumer unit showing 50°C when outside temperature is 15°C – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians
Published 23 October 2026
Finding your earth wire running hot at the consumer unit is understandably alarming, and you are right to be concerned. Under normal conditions, an earth conductor should carry little or no current during everyday operation. If it is sitting at 50°C with a cool ambient temperature of 15°C, something is wrong and it needs professional attention promptly.
What the earth wire is supposed to do
The earth conductor is a safety device. It provides a low-resistance path back to the source in the event of a fault, causing the protective device — your fuse or circuit breaker — to trip and cut the power. In normal everyday use, virtually no current should flow through it.
Why it might be running hot
Heat in an electrical conductor is always caused by current flowing through resistance. If your earth is warm, one of these things is likely happening:
1. A live-to-earth fault somewhere on a circuit is leaking current continuously through the earth.
2. A neutral-to-earth connection has broken down somewhere, causing neutral current to find an alternative path through the earthing system.
3. A loose or corroded connection at the main earthing terminal or earth electrode is creating resistance, causing heating even under small currents.
4. Multiple small leakage currents from appliances or cables with degraded insulation are adding up across the installation.
