Finding voltage on your earth wire even after turning off your main switch is a serious warning sign that should not be ignored. Here is what it means in plain terms and what you should do.

What the earth wire is supposed to do

The earth wire is a safety conductor. Under normal conditions it carries no voltage at all. It exists purely so that if a live wire ever touches metalwork, the fault current has a safe path back to the supply, which trips a fuse or circuit breaker before anyone can be harmed. If it is carrying voltage, something has gone badly wrong.

Why it might be live when your switch is off

The most common reasons are:

1. A neutral-to-earth fault somewhere in your wiring, where damaged insulation has allowed the neutral conductor to touch the earth conductor.

2. A cross-connection between your installation and a neighbour's circuit, especially in older terraced properties sharing a cut-out or service head.

3. Leakage from the distributor's network, which arrives at your installation even when your main switch is open.

4. A faulty appliance that was left plugged in, with internal breakdown allowing mains voltage onto its metalwork and back down the earth.

What you should check safely

Do not touch any exposed metalwork, water pipes, or metal consumer unit parts.

Unplug every appliance in the property.

Note whether the voltage is still present with all sockets and lights switched off.
