Why Is My Fuse Board Buzzing? (Plain English Explanation)
Hearing a buzz or hum coming from your fuse board (also called a consumer unit) can be unsettling, but the cause is not always dangerous. Here is what it could mean and what you should do.
Common reasons your fuse board is buzzing:
Loose connection inside the unit — This is the most serious cause. Loose terminals create arcing, which produces heat, a buzzing sound, and in the worst case, an electrical fire.
Faulty or worn MCB (miniature circuit breaker) — An MCB nearing the end of its life or carrying a load close to its rated capacity can buzz or vibrate.
Overloaded circuit — Too many appliances on one circuit can cause the MCB to buzz as it works near its trip threshold.
Normal RCD or RCBO hum — Modern split-load consumer units contain RCDs that produce a faint 50 Hz hum. If it is very quiet and has always been there, this is usually harmless.
Faulty RCD — An RCD that is failing or detecting a small persistent earth leakage current may buzz noticeably.
Loose or vibrating DIN rail — Occasionally the physical mounting rail vibrates against the enclosure.
What you can safely do:
Listen carefully — is it getting louder? Has it started suddenly?
Check whether a particular circuit breaker feels warm to the touch on its outer casing (do not touch wiring or terminals)
Reduce the load on circuits by unplugging appliance
