Why is my kitchen socket getting dangerously hot when I charge my laptop – Advice from Electriman, North London Electricians
Published 25 September 2026
Finding a hot socket in your kitchen is understandably alarming, and you are right to take it seriously. A socket that feels uncomfortably or dangerously hot is not normal and should never be ignored.
The most common reason this happens is a loose connection inside the socket itself. Over time, the screw terminals that hold the wires in place can work loose, especially in kitchens where vibration from appliances is common. When electricity flows through a loose connection, it has to squeeze through a smaller contact point, which creates resistance and generates heat. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets, and in serious cases it can start a fire inside your wall.
Here is what you should do right now:
1. Stop using that socket immediately.
2. Unplug anything connected to it.
3. Go to your consumer unit (fuse box) and switch off the circuit that feeds the kitchen sockets. If you are unsure which one it is, switch off the main switch.
4. Do not try to unscrew the socket faceplate yourself. Even with the circuit switched off, there may be live connections nearby that are on a different circuit.
Other things that can cause a socket to overheat include a faulty plug on the laptop charger itself, a damaged or undersized cable behind the wall, a socket that is simply old and worn out, or in rare cases a wiring fault further back along the circuit.
You can safely check the charger plug by plugging it into a different socket a
