What Does a Glowing Red Neutral Wire Mean?

If you can see a neutral wire that looks red, orange, or is visibly glowing, this is a serious electrical emergency. Under normal conditions, neutral wires carry return current back to the supply and should never generate visible heat. A glowing wire means the insulation is burning or has already partially melted — this is a fire hazard and a risk of electric shock.

Why Has This Happened?

Overloaded circuit – Too much current was drawn through a wire too small to handle it

Loose or corroded neutral connection – A poor connection creates resistance, and resistance creates heat

Shared neutral (multi-wire) fault – In older ring or shared-neutral systems, an open neutral can cause voltage imbalance and overheating

Back-feed from a parallel circuit – Even with the main switch off, current can re-enter from a generator, solar inverter, or interconnected circuit

Faulty neutral link or PEN conductor fault – A broken or deteriorated combined protective earth-neutral (PEN) in TN-C-S systems can cause dangerous voltage on what appears to be a neutral

What Should You Do Right Now?

1. Do not touch the wire — it may still be live even with the main switch off

2. Switch off all individual circuit breakers at the consumer unit before touching anything

3. Do not restore power under any circumstances

4. Check for the smell of burning
